Online Roulette in the UK: Which Wheel to Pick
Roulette is the easiest casino game to analyse, because the house edge is fixed by the wheel and nothing you do at the table alters it. The only decision that changes your expected cost is which wheel you sit at — and most sites offer all of them side by side.

Three wheels, three different prices
European roulette has 37 pockets — the numbers 1 to 36 and a single zero. A straight-up win pays 35 to 1 against odds of 36 to 1, and the difference is the house edge: 2.70%.
American roulette adds a double zero for 38 pockets while paying exactly the same 35 to 1. That single extra pocket takes the house edge to 5.26%, close to double. There is no compensating advantage anywhere else on the table. If both wheels are in the lobby, and they usually are, the American one is simply the more expensive way to place the identical bet.
French roulette uses the single-zero wheel and adds la partage, which returns half your stake on an even-money bet when the ball lands in zero. That halves the edge on those bets to 1.35% — the cheapest bet available in a normal casino lobby. It applies only to the even-money bets: red or black, odd or even, high or low.
Every bet on the same wheel costs the same
On a single-zero wheel, a straight-up number, a corner, a dozen and red-or-black all carry the same 2.70% expected cost. What changes between them is variance — how wildly the outcome swings — not price. Spreading chips across a layout does not reduce the edge; it averages your results towards it faster.
This is also why staking systems do not work. Martingale, Fibonacci, D'Alembert and the rest change the shape of your wins and losses, converting many small wins into an occasional large loss, and they feel effective for exactly that reason. None of them alters the price of a single spin, and each of them runs into the table maximum long before it runs into a guaranteed win.
What to check in the lobby
Look for the zero count before anything else — one pocket or two, visible on the wheel graphic and usually in the game name. Check whether la partage or en prison is offered if you play even-money bets. And on live tables, check the minimum: the same game can carry a few pence minimum in software and a couple of pounds in the studio.
