Online Blackjack in the UK: Rules and Edge
Blackjack has the lowest house edge of any common casino game, but only under a specific set of table rules and only if you play accurately. The gap between the best and worst blackjack table on the same site is larger than the gap between blackjack and roulette.

The rules that move the edge
Played with correct basic strategy on a favourable table, the house edge is roughly half a per cent. Change a few table rules and it multiplies. The one to check first is the blackjack payout: 3:2 is the standard, and a table paying 6:5 on a natural adds well over a per cent to the edge on its own. That is a bigger difference than most of the choices you will make anywhere else on the site, and it is printed on the table.
After that: fewer decks favour the player; a dealer who stands on soft 17 is better for you than one who hits it; being able to double after a split, and to double on any two cards, both help; surrender helps where offered. None of these are hidden — they are in the game's rules panel, and the panel takes ten seconds to read.
Basic strategy is not a system or an edge. It is the mathematically correct decision for every combination of your hand against the dealer's upcard, and it is what the half-per-cent figure assumes. Playing by instinct instead typically costs a further one to two per cent.
Side bets
Perfect Pairs, 21+3, insurance and the rest carry house edges several times higher than the main game, generally somewhere between two and eight per cent depending on the bet and the deck count. They are optional, they are priced to be taken, and skipping them costs you nothing.
Insurance deserves its own mention because it is offered every time the dealer shows an ace and it is framed as protection. It is a separate bet on whether the dealer has a ten underneath, priced worse than the hand you are already playing, and basic strategy declines it.
Card counting does not transfer online
Against an RNG table the shoe is effectively reshuffled every hand, so there is no count to keep. Live tables are dealt from a physical shoe but are typically cut deep and reshuffled well before a count could become useful, and operators reserve the right to close accounts they consider to be advantage playing. Approach online blackjack as a low-edge game played well, not as a beatable one.
Blackjack and bonus terms
Because the edge is so low, blackjack is the game bonus terms restrict most heavily. Expect a contribution of 10% or 0% towards wagering, and check whether play is excluded entirely while a bonus is active. This is not an operator being awkward — a game at half a per cent would otherwise let a bonus be cleared at almost no cost, which is exactly what the wagering requirement exists to prevent.
