Are Online Casinos Legal in the UK?
How online gambling is regulated for players in Great Britain, and what regulation does and does not cover.

The short answer
Online gambling is legal for adults in Great Britain, and operators offering it to players here must hold a licence from the national regulator. Playing at a licensed site is lawful; being 18 or over is the requirement.
This page is general information, not legal advice, and it does not cover every situation. Northern Ireland operates under a separate legal framework from Great Britain.
What licensing actually gets you
Regulation is not a guarantee that you will enjoy an operator or that any outcome will go your way. What it does is impose obligations the operator cannot opt out of.
- Customer funds must be held to a stated level of protection, disclosed to you.
- Deposit limits, reality checks, time-outs and self-exclusion must be offered.
- Advertising must not mislead, and must not target under-18s or vulnerable people.
- Identity and age verification must happen before you can gamble.
- Disputes that the operator cannot resolve must go to an approved independent adjudicator.
Unlicensed sites
Sites without a licence to serve Great Britain sometimes accept players here anyway. None of the protections above apply, there is no independent dispute route, and a refusal to pay out leaves you with essentially no remedy.
The absence of a clearly stated licence is the signal. A legitimate operator has no reason to be vague about it.
Rules worth knowing as a player
- You must be 18 or over.
- Credit cards cannot be used for online gambling in Great Britain.
- Verification must be completed before gambling, not deferred until you try to withdraw.
- A national self-exclusion scheme can block you from every licensed online operator at once.
Play responsibly
Gambling should be treated as entertainment, never as a way to make money. Only stake what you can comfortably afford to lose, and take a break if it stops being fun.
